Our Story
Handmade Natural Soap & Skincare
from Mpumalanga
Thyme & Thistle began long before there was a shop, a website or a single bar of soap. It started with a stack of herb books, a kitchen table and a deep curiosity about plants.
For more than 20 years, our founder taught herself about herbs, botanicals and traditional remedies the old-fashioned way, through books, research and years of hands-on practice. One plant, one remedy and one lesson at a time.
That slow, patient learning became the foundation of Thyme & Thistle Apothecary, a small-batch skincare brand in Mpumalanga creating handcrafted soap and natural skincare inspired by nature.
So what turned a lifelong passion into a business?
How we came to be
The Moment To Begin
Most of us know the feeling of putting our own needs, and our dreams, at the bottom of the list. After a difficult season of loss, one simple question kept coming back: “What are we waiting for?”
After years of learning, experimenting and dreaming, it was time to turn that passion into something real. In 2023, Thyme & Thistle Apothecary officially opened its doors.

What We Believe
We believe self-care doesn’t have to be complicated.
Life gets busy, and looking after ourselves is often the first thing to slip. We believe it shouldn’t be. Choosing gentle, natural products is one small, everyday way to put your wellbeing first, and those small choices add up to a better way of living.
Nature has provided ingredients people have trusted for generations, and we love bringing them into everyday rituals. Whether it’s a calming evening bath, a favourite bar of soap beside the sink or a thoughtful gift for someone special, we hope our products bring a little comfort and joy to your day.
When you take care of yourself, you’re also taking care of the people who love you. We hope every bar of soap is a small reminder that you’re worth caring for.

Made in Our Kitchen, Made Slowly
Everything we create is handmade in small batches in our kitchen in Mpumalanga.
Our soaps are made using the traditional cold-process method, and there’s one rule we never break: every batch is given the time it needs to cure properly before it reaches your hands. Depending on the ingredients used, our soaps cure for between six and eight weeks.
It takes longer, but the result is a harder, longer-lasting bar that feels luxurious to use and reflects the patience that handmade craftsmanship deserves.
What Goes In
We believe in transparency.
That’s why every product page includes a full ingredient list, allowing you to make informed choices and check for potential sensitivities before purchasing.
Our products are crafted using carefully selected plant-based oils, botanical ingredients, herbs, clays, oats, honey, and other natural as well as skin safe ingredients chosen for their quality and purpose.

We favour gentle, nature-inspired scents and avoid anything unnecessarily harsh.
Because every skin type is unique, we always encourage customers to review ingredient lists carefully before use.
Kind to People, Animals, and the Planet
We believe beautiful products shouldn’t come at the expense of the world around us.
We never test on animals, and we continually seek packaging options that are biodegradable, recyclable, or reusable wherever possible. From our ingredients to our packaging choices, we strive to make decisions that are kinder to people, animals, and the environment.

Honest About Handmade
One of the things we love most about handmade products is that they are never identical.
One of the things we love most about handmade products is that they are never identical. To us, that’s part of their charm.
Here’s what you can expect:
No two batches are exactly the same.
Natural colour variations and slight scent differences can occur from batch to batch.
Every bar is cut by hand.
Shapes, edges, and weights may vary slightly.
Our soaps create a rich, creamy lather.
They won’t behave like commercial supermarket soaps packed with synthetic foaming agents.
Soap lasts longer when it can dry between uses.
A draining soap dish makes a big difference.
Small batches sometimes sell out.
When they do, it simply means the next batch is still curing and will be ready soon.

WHAT’S NEXT?
A Gentle Baby-Care Range Is Still Close To Our Hearts.
One of our earliest dreams was a range of lovingly made products to support mothers and their little ones. Like most worthwhile things, it’s taking time, care and thoughtful planning. For now our focus stays on handcrafted soap, herbal skincare and natural wellness products, but that vision is still very much part of our journey.
Follow along as we grow. You never know what might be coming next.
